Passkeys Are Moving Beyond Passwords

Passwords have been part of online life for decades, but a different way of signing in is becoming common. Passkeys let people use the security already built into a phone or computer—such as a fingerprint, face scan or device PIN—instead of typing a memorized password. [1][3]

A passkey does not send a secret password to a website. It uses cryptographic keys stored through a user's device or password manager. This makes passkeys resistant to common phishing attacks because there is no reusable password for a fake website to steal. [3]

The system is moving beyond early adopters. In its 2026 global report, the FIDO Alliance estimated that about five billion passkeys were in active use. Its consumer survey covered ten countries and reported that 90% of respondents were familiar with passkeys and 75% had enabled them on at least some accounts. [1]

Companies are also experimenting with passkeys for employees. The same report said 68% of surveyed organizations were deploying, piloting or rolling them out for workforce authentication. [1]

The experience can still be confusing. A person may not know whether a passkey is stored on one device, synchronized through a password manager or available on another operating system. Sites also differ in how fully they have replaced passwords. [1][2]

Passkeys therefore do not mean passwords will disappear overnight. The transition depends on websites, devices and users adopting the same standards and understanding recovery options when a phone is lost or replaced. [1][2]

Still, the idea changes an old habit. Instead of proving who you are by remembering a secret phrase, you increasingly prove that you control a trusted device and can unlock it. For many users, the future of logging in may feel less like remembering and more like opening a door.
