How long someone remains in employment after 50 is usually discussed in terms of retirement policy, health or occupation. A Finnish study published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine on 18 August 2026 adds sleep to that conversation by estimating how sleep disturbances and sleep duration relate to working-life expectancy. The analysis drew on two cohorts: more than 70,000 Finnish public-sector employees and just over 6,000 participants from a broader health and social support study. Working-life expectancy was defined as the estimated time spent in the workforce between ages 50 and 68. [1][2]
In the public-sector cohort, participants with no sleep disturbances had an estimated 13.4 years of working life from age 50. Moderate disturbances corresponded to 13.0 years and severe disturbances to 12.8 years, making the gap between the first and last groups roughly eight months. [1]
Sleep duration produced a less intuitive result. Mid-range sleepers, defined as seven to eight and a half hours, had an estimated 13.2 years of working life, while people reporting nine hours or more had 12.4 years. The association with long sleep was particularly pronounced in the second cohort. [1][2]
Those numbers should not be read as evidence that staying in bed longer shortens a career. The study is observational, and the authors could not fully eliminate the influence of underlying illness, mental health or socioeconomic differences. Long sleep may be a marker of poorer health rather than a mechanism causing labour-market exit. [3]
The distinction illustrates reverse causation, a recurring problem in health research: instead of an exposure producing an outcome, early or hidden aspects of the outcome may help produce the apparent exposure. That possibility is one reason the authors frame their conclusions around supporting healthy sleep rather than prescribing a shorter night.
Working-life expectancy also captures more than retirement age. It reflects periods in and out of employment, so a reduction can arise through disability, unemployment or other exits from work. Sleep may therefore intersect with several pathways rather than one single decision to retire.
The practical message is modest but relevant in ageing societies. Sleep difficulties are treatable, and workplaces can reduce some sources of disturbed sleep, yet the study does not offer a simple formula for adding months to a career. It instead places sleep quality among the conditions worth examining when societies ask how people can remain well enough to work later in life.
