A pond full of calling frogs may sound romantic from a distance. For a female Cope's gray treefrog trying to choose a mate, however, the chorus can become a decision problem. A study published in iScience in August 2026 found that female frogs performed worse when they faced more mating calls at once. [1][2]

Researchers used speakers to play recorded calls in controlled tests. The females heard one attractive target call together with different numbers of competing calls. With two choices, females moved toward a mate in 97% of trials. With eight calls, that fell to 82%. [1]

The quality of the choice changed even more. With two calls, females selected the target 76% of the time. With eight, they chose it only 25% of the time. They also took longer on average to decide: about 114 seconds with two calls compared with 183 seconds with eight. [1][3]

The researchers also tested background noise because a crowded frog chorus can make individual calls difficult to hear. Their results suggested that the number of options itself mattered, not only the noise. They describe this effect as choice overload. [1][2]

Choice overload is familiar from human discussions about shopping or streaming services, but this experiment studied frogs, not people. The researchers are careful about that difference. Their main point is that limits on attention and decision-making may influence which animals successfully find mates. [1]

For the male frogs, this may create an unexpected opportunity. A perfect call is useful, but in a crowded chorus the female may not always identify the best option. Even in a frog pond, being one voice among many can change the result.
