When something unexpected happens, your eyes may quietly show that your brain has noticed. A Brown University study published in August 2026 examined pupil dilation—the moment when the dark center of the eye becomes larger—and what it may reveal about learning from surprise. [1][2]

The researchers asked 63 participants to complete tasks with colored squares. People made a prediction about what color they would see next, reported what they actually saw and then made another prediction. At the same time, the team measured pupil size and used EEG to record electrical activity from the brain. [1]

Unexpected colors produced stronger pupil dilation and changes in particular EEG signals. These physical changes were linked with arousal, a short rise in the body's alert state after something important or surprising happens. [1][2]

The interesting part was what happened next. People sometimes saw new information through the expectations they already had. After stronger surprise signals, that bias became smaller, and participants adjusted their later predictions more appropriately. [1]

The researchers describe this as a change in mental context. When the brain decides that the old situation may no longer explain what is happening, arousal may help it reduce the influence of old expectations and learn from the new situation. [1][2]

Pupil size has many causes, including light, so pupil dilation is not a simple mind-reading tool. The study instead shows a relationship between surprise, body signals and changes in how people use information during a controlled task. [1]

It is a curious reminder that learning is not only something we can describe with words. Sometimes the first sign that our expectations need an update may appear in the eyes before we have time to say, “I didn't expect that.”
