Education: What Is It Actually For?

Argue about education without the talking points

This lesson runs on the Education discussion set. It is not a vocabulary lesson about schools — at C1 you have those words already. It is about how you argue: conceding a point, qualifying a claim, and separating what you believe from what you can actually defend.

  • Talk about prestige, vocational training, tuition fees and qualifications without reaching for the usual talking points.
  • Concede a point and then put a limit on it, instead of swinging between agreeing and disagreeing.
  • Show how strongly you hold a claim by hedging it, rather than by saying it louder.
  • Answer the question the lesson is named after with a definition you can defend against one counter-example.
