Most people use passwords for websites and apps. But another sign-in method is becoming more common. It is called a passkey. [1]

With a passkey, you can often use your phone's fingerprint sensor, face scan or PIN. You do not need to type a normal password each time. [3]

Passkeys use special digital keys. A fake website cannot simply ask you to type the same secret password and steal it. This helps protect people from phishing. [3]

The FIDO Alliance says about five billion passkeys are now in active use around the world. In its 2026 survey, many consumers said they already use passkeys on some accounts. [1]

Companies are starting to use them for workers too. Some organizations are testing passkeys or adding them to employee sign-in systems. [1]

The change can still be confusing. Different websites and devices may work in different ways. People also need to know how to recover an account if they lose a phone. [1][2]

Passwords will probably stay around for some time. But passkeys show a new idea: instead of remembering many secret words, you can use a trusted device to prove that you are really you.
