Semiconductors are hidden inside many products, from smartphones and laptops to cars and factory equipment. Vietnam wants to become more important in this industry, but factories and investment are only part of the plan. The country also needs people with the right skills.

A national program aims for Vietnam to have at least 50,000 people with university-level or higher qualifications working across the semiconductor industry by 2030. [1][3]

Universities have a major role. A 2024 U.S. International Trade Administration report said 35 Vietnamese higher-education institutions offered direct semiconductor training or related subjects such as information technology, electronics and telecommunications. [2]

Chip design and manufacturing require specialized knowledge. Students may need to understand electronics, programming, materials and complex production systems. This makes practical laboratories and experienced teachers important.

The challenge is not simply producing a large number of graduates. Companies need workers whose skills match real jobs. Cooperation between universities and semiconductor businesses can help students gain useful experience before graduation.

For Vietnam, workforce development is connected to a larger economic goal. Moving further into high-value technology could create different types of jobs and strengthen the country's position in global supply chains.

The strategy shows why education policy and industrial policy often meet. A government can attract new technology companies, but those companies still need someone who knows what to do when they arrive.
