On the night of August 12 and the early morning of August 13, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its 2026 peak. NASA expects especially dark viewing conditions because the peak occurs close to a new moon. [1]
A meteor shower happens when Earth travels through a trail of small particles in space. The particles enter the atmosphere at high speed, become extremely hot and create short lines of light.
The Perseids are produced by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. They appear to come from the direction of the constellation Perseus, which gives the shower its name, although meteors can cross many different parts of the sky. [2]
Under very dark conditions, observers may see dozens of meteors in an hour. The real number varies with clouds, light pollution, location and the amount of sky a person can see. [2]
