Species redistribution is one of climate change's most visible biological consequences, but global summaries can be badly distorted by where scientists look and which languages they read. A study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution on August 5 assembled the largest global synthesis yet of documented butterfly range shifts, while also examining the biases hidden inside that evidence base. The collaboration compiled 6,182 range-shift reports from 567 studies and 68 expert assessments. Together they covered 1,758 butterfly species across 105 countries and territories—about one tenth of known butterfly diversity. The dataset included horizontal expansions, contractions and movements along elevation gradients. [1]
Within this evidence base, 80% of species had records of range expansion, while 27% had records of contraction and 22% had documented elevational shifts. These categories can overlap because a species may expand in one region while contracting or moving uphill elsewhere. Reported climate change and extreme weather were associated with most of the documented shifts. [1]
The percentages demand careful interpretation. They describe species represented in the assembled literature and expert evidence, not the proportion of every butterfly species on Earth currently changing range. Monitoring is much stronger in Europe than in many tropical regions, and in most countries researchers had range-shift information for less than 10% of the national butterfly fauna. [1][2]
Language itself changed the picture. The team incorporated studies in 15 languages and found that relying on English-language literature alone would have over-represented horizontal expansions and under-represented contractions. Expert assessments also contributed evidence that was distributed differently from the published English literature. [1]
Those methodological details are central rather than secondary. A global environmental conclusion can inherit the geography of research funding, monitoring networks and publication habits. Apparent absence of change may sometimes mean absence of observation, especially in biodiversity-rich tropical regions where long-term records are sparse. [1][2]
The study therefore offers two messages at once: butterflies are already being redistributed across a warming planet, and scientists still see that redistribution through an uneven observational network. Improving conservation will require tracking the insects, but also improving the global system that decides which changes become data in the first place.
