In a breeding pond, a female Cope's gray treefrog may hear multiple males advertising themselves at once. The obvious problem is acoustic: overlapping calls can be difficult to separate. New research published in iScience on 12 August 2026 suggests a second problem as well—the cognitive burden of having too many options. [1][2]
The researchers created controlled sound environments using recorded male calls and speakers. Females encountered one preferred target call alongside increasing numbers of alternatives. As the choice set expanded, the frogs became less likely to make a choice, less likely to select the target and slower to reach a decision. [1]
The scale of the change was striking. Target selection dropped from 76% with two calls to 25% with eight, while average decision time rose from 114 to 183 seconds. Some females also abandoned the search entirely before the trial ended. [1][3]
Crucially, the team varied background noise separately from the number of options. This helped distinguish energetic masking—when signals are literally harder to hear—from choice overload, in which the decision itself becomes more difficult because there are too many alternatives to evaluate. The researchers do not claim that frog behaviour can simply be mapped onto human dating or consumer choices. Instead, the study adds evidence that cognitive constraints can shape animal mate selection. Those constraints matter evolutionarily because the males that are chosen are the ones more likely to pass on their genes. [1]
