Article
For many learners, phone calls in English feel hard. The reason is simple. You cannot see the other person's face. But a few useful phrases make calls much easier.
It helps to get ready before you call. Think about why you are calling. Write down the important words, like a name or a time. A few notes help you feel calm.
When you answer, say hello and give your name. You can say, 'Hello, this is Sara.' When you call someone, say who you are. Then say why you are calling.
Some phrases are useful on almost every call. To ask for a person, say, 'Could I speak to Mr Lee, please?' To check information, say, 'Can I just check that?' These phrases sound polite.
It is normal to not understand every word. You can ask the person to slow down. You can also ask them to repeat. Just say, 'Sorry, could you say that again?'
Numbers and names are easy to get wrong. When you hear a number, say it back. When you give your name, you can spell it. This helps everyone avoid a mistake.
Sometimes the person is not there. Then you hear a voicemail. Leave a short message with your name and number. Say why you called, and speak slowly.
At the end, it is polite to say thank you and goodbye. A short, friendly ending leaves a good feeling. 'Thank you for your help. Goodbye!' is enough.
Phone calls are less common now. We send so many messages instead. But calls are still important for urgent things. With a little practice, you can make them with confidence.
