Scientists recently tested a new way to predict when a solar eruption will reach Earth. Using images from NASA's PUNCH mission, a research team predicted the arrival of one coronal mass ejection to within about 30 minutes. NASA announced the proof-of-concept result on August 4. [1]
Coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, are huge clouds of plasma and magnetic field thrown from the Sun. If a strong CME reaches Earth, it can disturb satellites, communications and power systems, and it can create risks for astronauts. [3]
PUNCH consists of four small satellites in low Earth orbit. Together they create continuous, three-dimensional views of the solar wind and the space between the Sun and Earth. The mission launched in March 2025. [2]
For the test, scientists looked back at a CME that left the Sun on May 31, 2025. Twelve hours after the eruption, their model settled on a forecast saying the storm would arrive eight hours later. The final prediction was accurate to within half an hour. [1]
NASA says currently used methods can give an arrival window of about five hours, so this test was much more precise. PUNCH can follow a CME through far more of its journey, providing the model with information about how the eruption changes as it travels. [1]
The result is promising, but it is not yet proof that every solar storm can be forecast this accurately. The findings were presented at a scientific meeting and are still under review. Researchers will need to test the method on many more events.
Better space-weather forecasts could give satellite operators, power companies and astronauts more useful warning time. The interesting part is not simply that PUNCH sees the Sun better; it may help turn those images into decisions people can make before a storm arrives.
