The Sun sometimes sends huge clouds of material into space. These events are called coronal mass ejections, or CMEs. Some CMEs travel toward Earth. [3]

NASA has a mission called PUNCH. It uses four small satellites near Earth. The satellites watch the Sun and the space between the Sun and Earth. [2]

Scientists used PUNCH pictures to study a solar eruption from May 2025. They tested a new way to predict when it would arrive near Earth. [1]

The prediction was very close. It was only about 30 minutes away from the real arrival time. NASA announced the result on August 4, 2026. [1]

Better predictions are useful because solar storms can cause problems for satellites, power systems and astronauts. People may have more time to prepare.

This was only an early test. Scientists need to study more solar storms before they know how well the method works every time. Still, it shows how better pictures from space may help people on Earth.
